Summer Watering Tips

Summer Lawn Watering Tips

Due to much drier summer weather conditions, irrigation water conservation is now important. It is crucial that irrigation runs only when it is needed and that the water is being applied as efficiently as possible. These are just some quick and easy ways to make sure that the water you are using is used properly and that you are fighting the heat and drought battle as best as possible:

Mow your lawn a setting or two higher than normal. Slightly taller grass will allow the soil to hold moisture a little longer and maximizes the amount of water used by the grass. Now that your grass is allowed to grow a little taller, make sure all of the irrigation heads are set high enough to spray over the taller grass.

Make sure that all heads are level and spraying water evenly across the area they are designed to irrigate. Each head should be able to spray to the next head (for head to head coverage). Check to make sure that the nozzles in each head are not clogged. Dirt and other debris can get in the nozzle of the heads and affect their spray pattern thus resulting in dry spots due to uneven coverage.

Adjust irrigation heads so they are not spraying water into the street. It is tough to keep 100% of the water out of the street, but by checking and adjusting the heads frequently, it will help reduce that amount.

Do not water lightly every day, a practice which encourages disease and creates a shallow root system. Do water early in the day as possible and avoid watering in the early evening, which does not give grass time to dry before nightfall.
